Put out a rain barrel for watering plants.
Drinkable water is wasted on plants. They are a lot tougher than we are, and they can handle rain water with a bit of dirt in it. Rather than using water from your hose to water your plants and lawn chairs, you can simply leave a rain barrel outside to gather water for the plants. It can be any kind of large outdoor container, and you should be able to find something for $10 or less – a trash can, an old wooden barrel, whatever works. When it’s raining, no problem. The plants are being watered. However, if you hit a dry spell, you have the water in your rain barrel to water the plants. You can figure out the best method for your needs when it comes to getting the water into the rain barrel and then out to the plants. You could just leave an open trash can on the back deck (preferably one that won’t rust) and then use buckets to draw out water when you need to water the plants. Some people arrange rain barrels to catch the water coming from the house’s gutters, which empty directly into the rain barrel. You can get pretty creative with the methods, but either way you save clean water and save money on your water bill. You would not want to drink the water from the rain barrel, because it tends to collect a bit of dirt, leaves, etc. but the plants don’t seem to mind. This simple plan can save many gallons of drinking water and up to hundreds of dollars in water bills (depending on how much you usually water your plants).
