Magazines

Drop unwanted magazines to a school art program.  Depending upon your proximity to a school, it may take as little as ten minutes to load up unwanted magazines that have been taking up room at your house, and to drop them off at a school to be used for collages in art class.  Many art programs are severely under-funded, and art teachers struggle with the challenge to create inexpensive projects that will stimulate children’s creativity and expression.  Art programs have been shown to increase children’s creative capacities, logical applications, spatial intelligence, mathematical ability, and many other areas of learning.  While elementary school aged kids may not have developed advanced drawing, painting, or sculpting skills, they can use collage to understand composition, color theory, perspective, design balance, and a number of other important concepts.  When doing collage, they just need poster board or paper, some type of adhesive (typically glue stick), scissors, and (the big one) PICTURES.  Art programs can never have too many pictures to use for collages, reference material, and teaching tools, and magazines are one of the best sources for those pictures (kid-appropriate magazines, of course).  Rather than throwing away your magazines, wasting paper, and taking up room in a landfill, it makes sense to let the kids have a crack at them before they are pitched.  As a matter of fact, you may even want to make a collage or two of your own to decorate your home.  Good collage is not merely a bunch of pictures stuck together.  When done properly, it is a true art form, and you can study collage methods through a number of sources.  You can avoid waste, help your schools, and contribute to the beauty of the world by putting your old magazines to good use for collages.
